Telematics Data Scientist

ABOUT ZEGO 🚀 At Zego, we're on a mission to do the good thing, not the insurance thing. Insurance hasn't changed much in over a century. The way we live, work and travel has. We're building the real-time, AI-driven infrastructure that powers innovative insurance, so good drivers get cover that works the way they actually drive. We're not just updating insurance; We're leading the AI evolution in insurance 🤖 For us, AI isn't a line on a roadmap or a buzzword on a slide. It's our operating reality, and it's how we build products that back drivers instead of the old insurance playbook. We don't do things slowly, and we don't do bureaucracy. We back high-performance builders who want ownership, early responsibility and the chance to do the most career-defining work of their lives. You'll get the space to try things, the tools to move fast, and the room to see your ideas reach millions of drivers. Do not take our word for it. About the team We don’t build pricing models, we build the driving intelligence that feeds them. Our mission is to drive safer roads and fairer insurance through data. The Telematics team transforms raw phone sensor data into meaningful insights about how people drive. Using advanced signal processing and machine learning, we process high-frequency data to extract behavioural signals that power our understanding of driving quality, context, and risk. About the Role As a Data Scientist, you’ll contribute to the future of behaviour-based insurance. You’ll contribute to the development of features and algorithms that detect driving patterns from sensors, test new hypotheses, and help bring impactful insights into production. You’ll work closely at the intersection of data science and engineering, generating scalable, real-world insights from GPS, accelerometer, and other spatial data. What you will be doing - Build and refine behavioural features and factors from telematics data. - Develop and maintain end-to-end pipelines in Python and SQL, ranging from simple heuristics to complex machine learning models. - Build robust solutions that scale, whether rule-based or ML-driven. - Collaborate with Software Engineers,Data Scientists, and Product Managers to implement features and evaluate their impact. - Run experiments, test new ideas, and assist in automating insight generation. - Translate complex sensor data into clear insights that can shape our roadmap and product. What you’ll need to be successful - MSc or BSc in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Statistics), or equivalent practical experience. - Hands-on experience developing data science or data engineering solutions. You’re comfortable writing production-grade code, not just notebooks. - Solid skills in Python and SQL, including standard libraries (Polars, Scipy, NumPy, Scikit-Learn). - Experience building or maintaining data pipelines and tools that are reliable and maintainable. - Clear communication skills: able to break down problems into testable hypotheses and collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams. - A growth mindset: curious, eager to learn from senior peers, and open to feedback. Nice to Have - Exposure to noisy, high-frequency, or time-series sensor data (e.g., GPS, accelerometer). - Familiarity with digital signal processing or sensor physics principles. - Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and tools like Docker or basic pipeline orchestration. - Background or interest in insurance, mobile telemetry, or behavioural modeling. - Experience applying Deep Learning models to time-series data. THE ZEGO WAYS OF WORKING 🏡 Teams work better with time to collaborate and space to get things done. We call it Zego Hybrid: some of us are in our office (central London or Halifax) weekly, others monthly or quarterly. It's about finding the balance between face time and focus that produces great work and a healthy life around it. We also make a point of getting everyone in the same room. Teams come together every quarter, and once a year the whole company does, properly. It's a serious investment and consistently one of the best parts of the year. Here is what the last one looked like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKOYDx6AMxQ. BENEFITS 🎁 💰 Market-competitive salary, benchmarked against your function and reviewed every year. 🏆 Annual performance bonus, linked to company performance and your contribution. 📈 Share options, a real stake in the company and a share in the future you build 🩺 Private medical insurance. 🏖️ Pension, generous holiday, and £1,000 a year to spend on getting to the office or learning something new. 💻 Cutting-edge systems and tools, so you always have what you need to drive your impact.
