Software Engineer Java - Payouts Platform

Who We Are: We’ve come a long way from our origins as a small startup. Today, we’re a truly global fintech company, with over 3000+ people from 80 nationalities, spread across 22 offices on 4 continents. And we’re growing and diversifying faster than ever before. SumUp enables businesses to get paid easily, process orders quickly, sell online instantly and manage their money more efficiently. We create the tools businesses need to make their business and their customer experience thrive. The Team: Our robust payments processing platform, consisting of various sub-platforms, has powered SumUp’s global business for over a decade. A critical component of this platform is our Payouts team, which owns the components responsible for payout profiles and payout scheduling. These systems play a critical role in the wider payout flow: they manage how and when merchants receive their funds and support the configuration needed for reliable payouts across markets. About the Role: Payouts are one of the most important parts of the merchant experience. When a merchant expects to receive their money, the process needs to be reliable, transparent and predictable. In this role, you’ll work on systems that directly support the movement of funds to SumUp merchants. You’ll help modernise existing components, build new capabilities and contribute to a platform that needs to operate reliably across markets and at scale. This is a role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex backend problems, working with distributed systems and balancing the needs of a legacy platform with the opportunity to build something better. Our Stack: Java (minimal setup, Spring Boot), Kafka Streams, PostgreSQL/RDBMS, RestEasy, VueJS. What you'll do: • Develop and maintain the payout profile and payout scheduling components of SumUp’s Payments Processing Platform. • Help transition the existing legacy system to a new event-driven microservices architecture. • Design and build scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot. • Work across the full software development lifecycle, from technical design and implementation to testing, deployment and production support. • Build reliable, maintainable and well-tested services that support money movement and merchant payouts. • Contribute to API design, data flows and integration patterns across the Payments Platform. • Investigate operational issues, identify root causes and implement permanent fixes. • Participate in technical discussions, architecture reviews and code reviews. • Collaborate with engineers, QA, Product and adjacent Payments teams to deliver high-quality solutions. • Help improve the team’s engineering practices, operational readiness and system maintainability. You will be a great fit if you have: • Strong professional experience across the full software development lifecycle. • Hands-on experience building backend services with Java and Spring Boot. • Experience working with distributed systems and microservices architectures. • Understanding of event-driven systems, service integration and reliable data flows. • Experience designing, building and maintaining APIs. • Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to investigating complex issues. • Experience writing production-quality, maintainable and well-tested code. • An ownership mindset and willingness to take responsibility for the systems you build and operate. • A collaborative approach and the ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders. • The ability to work autonomously while contributing actively to a team environment. • A tool-agnostic mindset and the ability to learn new technologies pragmatically. It would be a plus if you have • Experience building a system or service from scratch. • Experience with payments, payouts or other financial technology products. • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker and AWS. • Experience with observability, incident management and production support. • Experience modernising or migrating legacy systems. • Knowledge of payout flows, settlement, reconciliation or transaction processing. You don’t need to have experience with every technology listed above. We care about your engineering fundamentals, ability to reason about complex systems and willingness to learn. Why you should join SumUp: • Make an impact on a global scale - our systems serve millions of merchants • Learn from experienced engineers while working on complex, real-world problems • Be part of a tech-agnostic team that uses the right tools for the job • Collaborate with SumUppers worldwide on large-scale fintech products used by millions, based in our Sofia office (office-first setup). • Access a €2,000 annual L&D budget to attend conferences or advance your career through education. • Enjoy 25 days of paid leave (increasing with tenure), plus paid vacations for special occasions and a 1-month sabbatical every 3 years. • Benefit from extra perks like health and life insurance, co-sponsored Multisport cards, childbirth/adoption bonuses, discounts, a referral program, 100 EUR monthly food vouchers, 40 EUR flexible benefits, and more.
